big news!

Dear friends,

I started up The Sunday Shortstack in February 2012 because I really like pancakes and folk tunes, and because I wanted to see my friends more often for breakfast. It’s a year later now, and I still like all those things — but the friends I share Sunday breakfasts with are so many more now. Inventing new pancake combos and hunting for the loveliest of Vancouver’s folk music scene has been delightful, but for me the best magic of the Shortstack has always been the real sense of community I feel when people walk in that door for pancakes (or just to hang out and drink a cup of tea). I can’t count how many new and wonderful people I’ve met through this silly and special gig. Thank you so much to all of those folks who have supported us in the past year.

It’s with both excitement and sadness that I want to tell you about the upcoming closing of the Shortstack. It was always meant to be a temporary game — we’ve all got other stuff going on and believe pretty deeply in the value of things that end — and we’re coming up on the end of our time. We’ll be flipping flapjacks as usual all the way through March and April and then calling it quits to dream up whatever’s next for each of us. Join us on April 28th for our final ‘stack!

All of us here on your little crew are going to miss the Shortstack and seeing all of your faces every Sunday. Don’t be strangers! We’ll see around for the next two months — and then keep in touch, yeah?

xo,
Esther & the rest of the Shortstack crew

birthday party at the shortstack! february 3rd: classic flapjacks with two kinds of frosting, and the sunday shortstack turns one

A year ago this Sunday, we flipped our first flapjacks for an unexpectedly busy crowd. There were long waits and some chair shortages, but also delicious eats, beautiful tunes, and even a square dance. Since then, we’ve gotten a whole hell of a lot faster, made about a million new friends, and kept the music and short stacks coming. We couldn’t be happier to be celebrating our very first birthday and hope you’ll join us for a morning of mayhem, music, and, of course, pancakes. We’ll be serving up Classic Flapjacks with Two Kinds of Frosting (Vanilla and Chocolate). We’ll also have homemade yogurt, homemade butter, and maple syrup. As always, all organic and homemade, gluten-free and vegan stuffs available.

There will be pancake patches and preserves for sale, some cool stuff to win, balloons and other birthday swag to play with, SPEECHES (there may be speeches), and some of our favourite tunes to sing along with. Hope to see you there!

GLITTERING KINGDOM

Glittering Kingdom
spins a sparkly web of sonic alchemy, slacklining between lonely circus swing, prohibition-era jazz, folk noir and post-apocalyptic acoustic. Taking cue from the gypsy conductor behind the veil, these four gals (Katheryn Petersen, Lindy Gray, Jen Rashleigh and Belinda Bruce) twist and braid fine harmonies amidst guitar, accordion, saw, harmonica, melodica, kazoo and tinkly percussion.

last stack before vacation (december 16th): gingerbread pancakes with poached pears

It’s our last ‘stack before we take a little winter vacation! Come on out for a holiday hoorah before we take two weeks off to rest and rescheme. We’ll be opening again on January 6th, 2013.

This Sunday, we’ll be serving up Gingerbread Pancakes with Poached Pears. These pancakes are Ben’s favourite. Not to be missed. We will of course also have our usual homemade yogurt, butter, and maple syrup. As always, all organic and homemade, gluten-free and vegan stuffs available.

We will also be selling amazing edibles and crafts made by some rad artists from the Purple Thistle Center. There will be patches and cards and canned things and who even knows what else! We said this stuff would be there last week and then it wasn’t but it will be here this week! For real.

Because of a death in the family, there’s been a few last minute music changes, so you’ll have to wait just a little longer to find out who will be playing on December 16th! But it’ll be great, obviously.
